Cloud 9 on Siargao
Watching or surfing Cloud 9, the General Luna boardwalk, and how to time a Siargao trip around the swell.
Adventures
Cloud 9 is the reef break in General Luna that made Siargao a surfing town. The wooden boardwalk is for watching. The wave is for people who already surf reef or who are in a lesson on a smaller day. It is not a swimming beach.
The famous season sits roughly in the later months of the year when the Pacific swell is up. Other months can still be worth the island for lagoons and the mangroves, and they can be the wrong month if the only goal was that one wave. Ask a local school about conditions instead of trusting a poster in Manila.
General Luna has the rooms and the noise. A motorbike is the usual way around and also the usual way people get hurt on their first night. If you are new to it, ride in daylight.
Respect the lineup. The boardwalk view at sunset is enough for many trips. Lessons belong with a school that will not put a beginner on the reef at low tide. The old site’s shorter Cloud 9 note now lives here.
