Mount Pulag: plan the permit before the sunrise photo

Mount Pulag, on the boundaries of Benguet, Ifugao, and Nueva Vizcaya, is the high grasslands climb people mean when they talk about a sea of clouds. The Ambangeg trail is the usual first route. Akiki is steeper and less forgiving. Neither is a spontaneous Saturday.

Registration runs through the protected-area process, and weekend slots are limited. A van that “includes the permit” still needs your names in the real list. Homestays around the ranger station are part of the night, not a hotel upgrade. It is cold in a way Manila cold is not. A cotton hoodie is a mistake.

The sunrise view depends on wind and cloud. Go for the walk anyway, and turn around if the park closes the trail. Leave no trash on the grassland. The dwarf bamboo is the place, and it recovers slowly from shortcuts.

This is an overnight from Baguio or a very long haul from Manila. Do not pair it with a Baguio shopping morning on the same return day. You will be asleep, and you should be.
